Gerhard Richter
Gerhard Richter, b. on February 9, 1932 in Dresden, Germany, is a visual artist renowned for his diverse and influential body of work spanning painting, photography, and printmaking. Richter grew up in a tumultuous period marked by World War II and the division of Germany during the Cold War.
Richter began his artistic training in the early 1950s, studying at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. He later fled East Germany in 1961, shortly before the construction of the Berlin Wall, settling in West Germany. In the following years, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he was influenced by artists such as Sigmar Polke and Blinky Palermo.
Richter's early works were characterized by a blend of figurative and abstract elements, reflecting his exploration of different artistic styles and techniques. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, he developed his distinctive approach to painting, which often involved blurring and obscuring images to create a sense of ambiguity and mystery.
